RECOPE (Costa Rican Oil Refinery) bets for projects to diminish the use of petroleum based fuels.
The
biofuels, hydrogen for transportation and mixing fuel with LPG
(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) are on the top priority list of the Costa
Rican Oil Refinery (RECOPE) to reduce oil dependence in Costa Rica.
This
project is inherited from the previous government; one of the
initiatives is to analyze different combinations of fuels, for example,
gasoline and diesel with LPG.
It is planned to start in 2013 with
the opening of an engine group that is building the research and
development department to evaluate different fuel blends and effects of
its performance, emissions, efficiency, among others.
The main
objective of the hydrogen project is to design and implement an
experimental system for the production, compression and storage of
hydrogen gas, the characteristics and results are relevant to the
introduction of this fuel in the public transportation system in Costa
Rica.
For that reason a preliminary agreement was signed between
the AD AstraRocket and Refinery Company, which ended on April 12, 2012.
The result was a technical document on the technical feasibility of
implementing a hydrogen storage system that will be made safe and a
pilot for a joint task force of the RECOPE research area and AD
AstraRocket.
Costa Rica already has an LPG station for several bus companies who already made the modifications to their vehicles.
From
all the energy consumed in the country, about 68% comes from petroleum,
a source more expensive and more polluting. Over half of these
derivatives are consumed in the transportation sector.
